The 50 billion dollar question I am asking is “Is Japan currently on crack, and if so can I have what they are having?” The reason I am asking this is you may wonder? Well, have you seen or heard anything about Nintendo recently, what about Honda and Toyota? All three have named their new product something that can only be described as…”WTF, are you kidding me?” Ok here is the thing, Nintendo has officially named their new console (formerly the “Revolution” which made absolute sense) the “Wii”, and yes that is typed correctly and it is pronounced just like the word “we,” but more on that in a bit. Toyota has com out with a new car called the “Yaris,” and Honda has come out with the “Fit,” and yes both are cars and no I have no clue why they named it that or what it means. It sure does make me wonder as to how any of those board meeting went when the marketing department came up with the names of all three, my guess is that there must have been much, much worse names thrown out the window before they came up with these. But back to my original point, what is going on here, these products are geared toward the American market, not the Japanese market. Lets start of with the “Fit,” ok fist off a horrible name for a car, the “Fit” it does make me want to have a fit that is for sure and no I don’t want the car either. For a second there I thought I was a joke, then it turns out to be a real car, wow really scraping the big ol’ barrel of craptastic names at Honda I see. Next… The Yaris, a better name than the “Fit” but that’s it, but I give them credit for at least coming up with a crack pot name that sounds like a car. Then comes Nintendo, don’t get me wrong I love Nintendo (almost fan-boyishly), with the “Wii,” easy to spell, has in interesting back-story, and above all rhymes with pee, oh and Yippee. Oh yeah a real winner. The Revolution was a perfect name, it described the product, people knew that it was new and different, and guess what it was Revolutionary, seems logical to me to name it the revolution. But alas Nintendo didn’t follow the logic path as well as most people do, I think they got lost at the fork in the road, you know the one that reads: <--Good Name Road : WTF Lane-->. Ok the hardware is still going to be revolutionary, well let’s hope Nintendo doesn’t screw that up too. I will probably still buy the, errrr, “Wii” and still like it. But I still think the Revolution was a great name. Wii on the other hand not so great… But maybe it might grow on me, doubt it but you never know, iPod name did, weird name though. I guess Nintendo thought they needed to come up with something more revolutionary than the name Revolution, well…. The Wii is a different name, I will give them that and nobody will mistake the name, because Nintendo will drill that into our brains, I count on that. But still the “Wii,” Nintendo you really should consider the names before your marketing department is allowed to slap names on things. But I do give them this, they wanted to stir up a, well, revolution with the new console, and I do believe if all the talk that has been going on about it is any indication, then they are well on their way to doing that, albeit with a stupid ass name like the “Wii.”
